The Southern Area Conference was held November 5, 2005, at Allen B.
Carter Post 24 in Hattiesburg. Southern Area Commander Stan Cantrell
opened the joint meeting at 10 a.m. State dignitaries for the Legion and
Auxiliary were introduced. SAC Cantrell called on different Post
Commanders to give reports of their status after the storm. A film made by
National was shown of a Gulf Coast tour.
A delicious lunch was served at noon. Many thanks to Post and Unit 24 for
their hospitality! Thanks, too, goes to District 9 President Kathy Williams
for her planning of the day.
The Auxiliary meeting began at 1 p.m., under the leadership of Department
President Glenda Wheelis. For a bit of fun, Department Historian Madeline
Vuncannon presented Dept. President Glenda with a dancing Rooster for
all of us to enjoy! Following that act, Program Chairmen were asked to go
over the plans of work for the year.
A raffle held prior to the joint opening was very successful, including a
cake made by Glenda. Monies collected benefited the support fund.
The Girls State Committee, chaired by PDP Lou Wilkerson and Girls State
Director, met to decide on the location of the 2006 Girls State program.
The University of Southern Mississippi's bid was again accepted.
